Caistor Roman Project Open Day Weds 27th July 2016 at Caistor Hall

Ever wanted to try your hand at an archaeological dig? We are so pleased that the Caistor Roman Project has been given a grant through the lottery fund, which means they can continue with their research in and around the Roman town of Venta Icenorum (Caistor St. Edmund). They often use Caistor Hall as a base for planning meetings and exhibitions, and are hosting an open day here on Wednesday 27th July. Last year we had 120 attendees, so you can see how popular this is. It is not surprising that people are interested in the archaeology – Caistor St Edmund is one of only three Roman regional capitals in Britain that were not built on in subsequent years, so it provides a wealth of information. The open day on Wednesday is free to all members. Non-members will be charged £5 (which will be deducted from the membership fee if you join at this event). You can also have a guided walk for £2 Walk only: £2        Walk, exhibition and talks £5 Times: Opening Walk 13.00 Closing Walk 18.00 Exhibition and Talks 14.00-17.30 You will be able to browse an exhibition of information and finds from fieldwalking, […]

Father’s Day Special Offer

Father’s Day is held on the third Sunday of June in the UK, which means that this year (2015) it falls on 21st June. We say “in the UK” as the idea was probably introduced from the United States, but is not necessarily held elsewhere around the world. If you look up “Father’s Day” on the web, you will find descriptions to explain Father’s Day to non-UK people, such as:   “Some families celebrate Father’s Day by planning an outing or weekend trip, perhaps just for the male members of the family. This may be a simple walk in the countryside or a whole planned “experience”…….Other families organize a special meal at home or in a pub or restaurant. A common Father’s Day meal is a traditional roast dinner with meat, stuffing, potatoes and vegetables…. and accompanied by pints of ale or lager.” ( When you read this,  you will appreciate why Caistor Hall in Norfolk, is the perfect venue for Father’s Day celebrations. We have plenty of walks on our doorstep, including the remains of a Roman Town, we have a great restaurant, with views of the gardens, and plenty of parking. There is, of course, a Father’s Day […]
